Introduction

Tuscany is an Italian region located north of Lazio, the region where we find our capital, Rome. Tuscany has a Mediterranean climate, especially in its coastal zone (in the western part) especially in coastal regions and, consequently, winters are milder than in other regions and summers are hot, very hot: in the interior of the region, during the summer temperatures easily reach 35 degrees. It is important to consider that, due to its geographical and relief influence, the climatic conditions of the region that is on the continent, are different from the climatic conditions that we find in the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. Discover our section on Climate in Italy!

The Rains

Regarding rainfall, rainfall is not excessive throughout the year. During the summer months, June, July and August, there is little rain in the coastal region of Livorno, and temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius. The water temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius and at the top, in the higher regions, they are a little cooler, but dry during the winter.

Important notes

We must consider global warming, of course. The phenomenon has changed the climate around the world, and in Italy this would be no different, so be aware that you can find a different climate than you would find in the current season – especially in the mountains. To avoid possible surprises, before traveling, check the weather conditions and always carry a change of clothes in the suitcase for the ‘opposite season’ to the one you are traveling.

In other words

The climate of the region is excellent almost all year round. Both in the warmer and colder seasons, the region is ideal for visits to the region’s surroundings, tours in cultural cities and places of tourist interest. During the fall travel season, it is possible to witness the grape and olive harvest. The periods with the least tourists are spring and fall; in summer, the region is very busy.

I will detail for you all the seasons so that you can better understand about the periods that you intend to travel.

Tuscany in spring

One of the most beautiful stations, without a doubt. Everything, literally, is renewed and the landscape is transformed in an almost magical way! Coming out of winter, temperatures rise rapidly and the air is cool, but mild – except for the cold that is still present in the morning, especially in the month of March. In May, the weather allows you to wear light clothes during the day, but asks for a light jacket for nights that have a light cooler wind, but it is not cold at all. Tuscany in the summer

Between the months of June to August – the busiest months in terms of tourism in the region – the days are characterized by splendid climatic conditions. The days are beautiful, sunny and deliciously hot. For those who like the summer, everything is perfect! Yes, there are some isolated rains at certain points, but – usually – they are passing and refreshing rain showers. IMPORTANT: it is during the summer that some storms can occur! So it is important that you check the weather forecast before leaving for your tour, OK? If the climatic conditions are extreme, the civil defense will issue attention alerts. Stay tuned! Tuscany in the fall

The weather starts to cool down! We have reached the fall! As in the great Italian islands, Sicily and Sardinia, Tuscany fall is characterized by mild temperatures and beautiful sunny days, but with a chill that is felt on the skin. In September and October, however, the climate remains favorable for outdoor activities in most parts of the region. In November, the cold gets a little more intense, but nothing unbearable. The use of heavier clothes is suggested, especially in the morning and in the late afternoon, as in some places, the sun can slightly warm the air during the afternoon.

Tuscany in winter

We are finally at winter! The cities are emptier; the mass of tourists dissipates, as well as the mild climate. Between December and February, temperatures rarely drop below freezing and snow is a rare phenomenon in the region, however it is possible, especially in rural areas. Regarding rainfall, winter is also the rainiest period, which keeps many Fiorentines indoors. Also, read Where to ski in Tuscany!

Conclusion

When is the best time to visit Tuscany? Choosing the best period to travel depends on your traveler profile. Of course, if you want to tour in coastal cities, I suggest that you do it during the spring or summer. If you don’t want to face the great tourist mass, the end of spring is the ideal period for you. If you are in the group that cannot stand the heat, and do not cope high temperatures well, both during fall and winter, you can visit cities, museums, monuments and so many other attractions with tranquility and, best of all, without the great mass of tourists.
