A bit of history

The incredible Boboli Gardens were born with the imposing Medici family and were designed by Niccolò Pericoli, known as Tribolo. The initial design was simple, but in the 17th century it received a new design with a more complex architecture. Over the years, and after many reforms in the 18th and 19th centuries, the end result is still seen today. The garden has numerous statues and sculptures, in addition to impressive vegetation, so it undergoes maintenance and conservation processes frequently, but nothing that alters the functioning for visitors. The Origin of the Name

The origin of the name Boboli is probably a popular contraction of the family name Borgolo or Borgoli. This piece of land belonged to them and that land came into the hands of Luca Pitti in 1418, forty years before starting the construction of the building that later took its name. Tribolo left a project for which the amphitheater would be built from the excavation of the hill, it was there that would be the first plan of the work and that would be the natural extension of the Ammannati patio, between the palace and the future Belvedere Fort. 1) Visit the Boboli Garden in Florence – GET TO KNOW THE PALACE AND ITS CONSTRUCTION

For the structure of the Palace, strong stone from this basin was used. Tribolo died shortly after, in 1550, and the direction of the works passed to Bartolomeo Ammannati and, finally, to Bernardo Buontalenti. A view of the garden in the late 16th century is found on one of the telescopes of the Medici villages in the Giusto Utens series (1599), in the village of Artimino and now preserved in the village of Petraia. Under the orders of Cosimo II (1609-1621), the garden underwent the most important of all expansions and tripled its length by the hands of Giulio Parigi and his son Alfonso, creators of the second axis towards Porta Romana, the so-called Viottolone. Viottolone is a wide avenue on a steep descent flanked by two rows of cypress trees planted in 1637. The path is decorated with numerous statues, which mark the secondary axis of the garden. The statues, placed millimeter close to the intersections with the three transversal avenues, are old and came from Rome in the 18th century. The garden was opened to the public for the first time, albeit with due limitations, during the reign of Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena and in June 2013, the Garden became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The garden plan has a slightly elongated triangular shape, with two steep slopes and two almost perpendicular axes that intersect close to the Fountain of Neptune, an item that stands out in the panorama. From here a series of terraces, avenues and paths are developed with perspective views that have statues, beautiful paths, clearings, walled gardens, buildings and old roses.

The view of the ensemble is scenographic and surprisingly beautiful. Here we also find the Mostaccini Fountain, whose sequence of waterfalls is a testimony of the 17th century of the old drinking fountains for decoy birds, used in the practice of birds. The old aqueducts that fed the entire complex are underground and part of the garden is dedicated to the Camellias, where it is possible to observe several species of this beautiful flower, this collection started in the 17th century.

Between 2000 and 2005, the Botanical Garden Tepidarium was the center of a series of restoration and cleaning interventions, both externally and internally. In 1790, an Egyptian obelisk dating from the 16th century BC. was placed in the center of the garden amphitheater. He was brought to Rome from Egypt by the emperor Domitian and placed in the Temple of Isis. Later, it is not known why, he was taken to Vila Medici and placed in the garden.

The Obelisk is one of the oldest monuments in Tuscany and was built even before the birth of Etruscan culture, the birthplace of Tuscan society and all of central Italy.
