This Post is born from the diverse questions of many readers. In this post I will try to answer the most frequently asked questions, see below what they are: What to do in a week in Tuscany? In the following post I try to answer in the best possible way, giving tips and information about each corner of Tuscany. Introduction

Tuscany is one of the most visited Italian regions. Who has not seen one of its many postcards, with the cities of art or the hills of cypress trees? I know how difficult it can be to organize and plan a trip to a region like this, with so much that is worth discovering, so I will try to help you in this difficult task, O.K.?

There are really many things to see and visit in Tuscany, to get to know this region completely, we would need a tour of at least a month, but if you have a week, you will be able to get to know the best of the best of Tuscany. Also read about The five must-see castles in Tuscany!

Itinerary

Some parts of the region can be easily reached by public transport, but to get to know the small villages you will have to go by car (read here how much it costs to travel by car in Italy). It will be your decision, if you take this tour with a rental car or if it is better to do it with a private driver or a group tour. See also our examples of itinerary with the car.

The itinerary I specify below was made by me and my husband (2017), so I can personally guarantee it is feasible and that after a week you will understand why this region is one of the most famous in the world. It is really a dream and the trip is totally worth it! Discover also the wine routes in Tuscany.

On average, this itinerary has a maximum of 150 km per day, so you can do it based on an overnight stay in Florence and Siena (if you prefer not to change hotels often) or you can do as I did, I slept in three different zones, so the trip was not too tiring, I could enjoy the day and the various locations more.

Where to sleep?

I chose to sleep in Agritourisms (resort hotels) which made the itinerary even more beautiful; for example (for the visit of Pisa and Lucca we slept in an agritourism in the area of Florence, to visit the cities of Chianti, San Gimignano and Volterra we slept in the area of Siena, and finally, to visit Val D´Orcia we slept in the small village of Bagno Vignoni). 1) A week in Tuscany? FLORENCE

One or two days in Florence – If you have at least one week I recommend two days to get a good look at Florence, however, if you prefer to dedicate more time to the various villages, in one day you will only be able to visit the main monuments, such as Santa Maria del Fiore Duomo or Cathedral, Giotto’s Campanile, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Church of San Lorenzo, La Piazza della Signoria (Signoria Square) and the Loggia de Lanzi (Lanzi’s Lodge).Of course, if you want to see the Uffizi Gallery where you will see masterpieces by artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and so many others and the Galleria dell Academia (Academia Gallery), where Michelangelo’s original David is kept, you will need two full days to visit Florence. There you can do everything on foot, with public transport or taxi. SEE AN EXAMPLE OF A DAY ITINERARY IN FLORENCE

2) A week in Tuscany? PISA AND LUCCA

A day to visit Pisa and Lucca – This day can be done by train, see the post How to get to Pisa and Lucca from Florence, but to make the most of the day, I advise that starting today, start the trip by car. We will leave early for Pisa, where we will visit the famous Square of Miracles and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Also take time to visit the interior of the Duomo, the Baptistery and Camposanto.

After lunch, we will continue to Lucca, where we can take a walk through its beautiful Renaissance walls. I advise renting a bicycle to go around the entire wall, it is a beautiful ride! Within the walls, you will find the beautiful historic center with its tower houses that you must absolutely not miss; climbing a tower house costs between 3 and 5 Euros and you can take pictures of beautiful landscapes. Advice: Overnight in Florence or in the Lucca area.

3) A week in Tuscany? SAN GIMIGNANO AND VOLTERRA

A day to visit San Gimignano and Volterra – Departure to the city of San Gimignano, which, thanks to its strategic location on Via Francigena, contains an amazing wealth of works of art. City tour and continuation to Volterra: city of Etruscan civilization! Your visit then begins by crossing the Porta all’Arco (Door to the Arch), built 2,350 years ago, where you will find a perfectly preserved medieval city. You will also visit the Cathedral with works by Benozzo Gozzoli and Bartolomeo Fra, the Baptistery and the Roman theater on the sides of the thermal baths. I advise you to stay overnight at some agriturismo in the San Gimigniano or Siena area where you can end the night with a wonderful dinner based on the great Chianti wine.

4) A week in Tuscany? SIENA AND MONTERIGGIONI

A day to visit Siena and Monteriggioni – Siena together with Florence are considered the two main cities of art in Tuscany, so fundamentally on a trip in Tuscany you cannot miss visiting them. In the center of Siena you will feel like you have returned to the Middle Ages. The city center is located on several hills so you will go up and down, but in general you will find the main attractions of Siena very close to each other.

Obviously you should start your tour in the famous Piazza del Campo (Field Square), with a super particular shape, but mainly important because it is where each year the famous horse race takes place in the neighborhoods of the city. The party takes place on July 2nd and August 16th, so if you are in Tuscany during this period do not miss this great event! Be sure to visit  Palazzo Comunale (Municipal Pallace), Torre del Mangia (Eat Tower), the Cathedral and the Baptistery. The Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches in all of Europe, so be sure to place it among the places to be seen.

Monteriggioni

Then, I recommend a tour of the small village of Monteriggioni, which I consider one of the most beautiful in Tuscany. The town is actually a castle with 15 towers and an important wall, where you can walk and see a wonderful panorama! This tour is unmissable!! I advise staying overnight in some agritourism in the Siena area.

5) A week in Tuscany? CHIANTI

A day to visit Chianti – On that day we will visit the famous Chianti hills between Florence and Siena, which owes its reputation above all to its excellent wines. You will visit places such as Greve in Chianti, Gaiole, Radda and Castellina in Chianti, which are the pillars of the world of the black cock, a quality mark of the consortium of Chianti producers. But in addition to the vineyards, Chianti also offers small countryside churches, medieval villages and imposing castles. And at night I advise you to enjoy a fabulous dinner served on a farm where you can taste typical wines and products, in addition to contact with the local nature!

Greve in Chianti

In Greve in Chianti I advise you to visit the Museu del Vino (Wine Museum), where you can taste more than 200 types of wine from the region. Even if you are not a wine lover, you must stop at one of the many farms to take a wine tour !! It would be like going to Rome and not going to the Vatican, O.K.? I advise staying overnight in some agritourism where you can end the night with a wonderful dinner based on the great wine of Chianti. 6) A week in Tuscany? VAL D´ORCIA

A day to visit Val D’Orcia – Departure for the whole day to visit some towns where the Renaissance and the medieval are connected. They are all close to each other, so in a day you can visit them all by car. Val d’Orcia is another area of Tuscany famous for its stunning landscape and excellent red wines. Do you know those pictures of green hills, cypress trees, sunflowers? This is where you will find those beautiful panoramas. Wine route in Val d’Orcia?

The Medieval Burgos

You can visit the famous medieval villages of Pienza, San Quirico d’Orcia, Montalcino, Montepulcino and Bagno Vignoni. They are super small, graceful and are all at most 50 kilometers, so in one day you can see them all. This area is known all over the world for the DOC Brunello di Montalcino and Montepulciano wines, so walking the streets of these villages you will have the opportunity to make many tastings! I advise you to sleep in an agritourism or a B&B in the romantic city of Bagno Vignoni, super romantic and famous for its flooded square!

7) A week in Tuscany? CORTONA AND AREZZO

A day to visit Cortona and Arezzo – If you still have a day available I advise you to complete the tour of Tuscany in these other two cities, less tourist compared to the others, but with a great artistic and cultural heritage. I’m sure you will not regret it.

Arezzo

Arezzo is famous for being the birthplace of Piero della Francesca and Giorgio Vasari, so be sure to visit the Basilica of Saint Francis with the splendid canvases of Piero della Francesca, the Church of Saint Dominic with the Crucifix of Cimabue, the Piazza Grande (Great Square), among other monuments.

Cortona

After Arezzo’s visit we will proceed to Cortona where we will bring our tour of Tuscany to a perfect end. Cortona was the scenic stage of the film “Under the Tuscan Sun”, so if you want to visit it before the trip, just watch this film, ok ? The main attractions are the Diocesan Museum with the famous canvas of the Annunciation by Beato Angelico, Piazza della Republica (Republic Square) and finally the Museum dell Accademia Etrusca (Museum of the Etruscan Academy). Advice: At the end of this tour, proceed to Florence where you will continue your journey through Italy or return to your country, or continue to Rome or to visit other important locations such as Assisi, Perugia.
